Church of God Founded in Jerusalem on the Day of Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4). The Churches of God have generally cited CE 31 as the year of the Crucifixion. In recent years some few have leaned toward CE 30 but the evidence for doing so is scanty. The weight of the existing evidence is for a CE 31 Crucifixion and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Codex W, sometimes called Codex Washingtonius, lodged in the Smithsonian Institution at Washington, DC, has an imbedded chronology. Codex W is one of oldest known codices. The year of the Crucifixion recorded in this codex is 784 AUC (Roman dating). 784 AUC = CE 31. |
| 31-43 | Tradition suggests that the Twelve remained in Judea for 12 years before leaving to carry the gospel throughout the world as they knew it (see Hoeh's "Where Did the Twelve Apostles Go?"). During this time some suggest that Matthew wrote a Hebrew version of his gospel, known as proto-Matthew, later rewritten in Greek in the expanded form we know as Matthew's Gospel in the Byzantine text family. While ca. CE 41 appears to be more tenable as a date some date proto-Matthew to as early as CE 36. |
