Collection Development Donations

Home

Living University appreciates offers of gifts of items for its collections including books, journals, manuscripts, art works, rare books, and items illustrating biblical history such as displayable artifacts (Ancient Egyptian, Canaanite. Israelite, Mesopotamian, and Greco-Roman). The library seeks foreign language publications supporting the university's mission. The Library welcomes donated items that enhance its collections in support of the University's teaching, public service, and research needs. The Library declines offers of gifts if they unnecessarily duplicate existing holdings, if the subject matter is outside the scope of its collections, or if there are donor restrictions the Library cannot honor.

Members of the University community should contact the Library Services Director to discuss possible gifts of books, journals, or other materials before sending them. The Library Services Director may send gifts to a LU branch library (Adelaide, London, Mississauga, Johannesburg) as needed. If a gift collection is accepted, the Library may sell those items not appropriate for the collection and which cannot be referred to branch libraries. The library has to decline materials in poor condition or in outdated formats.

When donations are accepted, donors are sent a letter acknowledging their gift signed by the Library Services Director. This letter can be used to claim a tax deduction for charitable giving. The University Library and library staff are prohibited from appraising the value of gifts for tax purposes.

For questions relating to general gift policy matters or for information concerning basic tax and estate planning in connection with gifts-in-kind, contact Doug Lindly, Library Services Director, by email at dlindly@lcg.org or by telephone at (704) 844-1966.
