To the right is a list of those courses that a student must complete for an Associate of Theology degree. This program of study normally requires two years of full-time study (see Suggested Full-time Schedule). Students who plan to fulfill program requirements on a part-time basis should seek to finish the degree program in not more than seven consecutive calendar years (see Suggested Part-time Schedule). These courses are not available in the summer session.

Program Purpose

The purpose of this program of study, which provides students with an in-depth study of the Bible and related topics, is the preparation of servant-leaders equipped with a sound theological base for leadership, teaching, and ministry within a local church, primarily related to volunteer or bi-vocational service.

Program Objectives

On successful completion of this program, a student should be able to:

  • Demonstrate the veracity and reliability of the Bible;

  • Understand and can explain the New Testament and its implication and application;

  • Demonstrate and exemplify Christian leadership and values;

  • Know and demonstrate understanding of biblical doctrines;

  • Demonstrate a working familiarity with the Hebrew Scriptures; and

  • Show understanding of the history of the Church.

Program Prerequisite

This program is open only to regular (matriculated) students.

Program Requirements

This degree program requires successful completion of a minimum of 66 semester hours including a minimum of 36 semester hours in general education coursework and a major in theology of 30 semester hours. For graduation, a student must have a minimum overall GPA of 2.0 in the 66 semester hours applicable to the degree and a grade of C or better in ENGL 111 and 112.

Required general education coursework consists of 9 semester hours in communications (ENGL 111, 112 and SPCM 150), 3 semester hours in humanities/fine arts (ENGL 261 or 262), 3 semester hours in social /behavioral sciences (ANTH 220 or HIST 111), 3 semester hours in natural sciences/mathematics (ANTH 230 or MATH 162), 3 semester hours in health promotion (HPRO 114), and 15 semester hours in theology (THL 135, 136, 200, 211 and 212).

The theology major consists of THL 226 and 250 and 24 semester hours in upper division courses including THL 320, 332, 412, 413, 416, 421, 422 and 467.

A student can not apply more than 18 semester hours credit to an associate  degree when earned through the Open Learning Program. Generally, it is best for one to apply for admission as a regular (matriculated) student upon deciding on a specific certificate, diploma or degree. See Making Application.

Program Advisement

Each student entering the Associate of Theology degree program has an assigned adviser who will be available for program advisement and career information. An adviser helps a student create a workable plan to meet his or her educational objectives within a reasonable time period.

Application for Graduation

For the conferring of the certificate students should apply for graduation in the semester they plan to graduate. An Application for Graduation must be filed with the Registrar by midterm for graduation that semester.
